The article called Special Treatment: The Restoration of Manila’s polluted waterways is transforming lives and showcasing ecology technology by Paul Miles came out April 8th. The article is about the success in the Paco Canal, Manila Philippines and the relevance of this type of approach throughout the world. His final conclusion was, “Water treatment systems that don’t take up any space on land, and that look beautiful too, are clearly the way to go.”

| Biomatrix Water is working together with the ABS-CBN, foundation, and the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission to implement a fast track, in situ approach to improve water quality in key canals, such as the Paco Canal
The system incorporates a series of movable, floating water treatment systems called Active Island ReactorsTM which create a powerful matrix of complex biological reactions to reduce the heavy pollution load, and re-activate the waterways natural cleansing ability.
The system has been installed in just one week, thanks to the hard work of the project team and in particular local resident River Warriors, who will benefit from the systems and who are now becoming skilled work force for waterway restoration.

BIOMIMICRY IN ACTION
The final configuration of the system, was partly inspired by the intricate structures of the Coral reefs of Palawan, which stand up to the harsh conditions of ocean storms and currents.
In heavy rains, the entire system floats up with the changing water level and the Dynamic Media Columns fold underneath allowing the water to flow freely past, a big improvement from a year ago when the Estero was congested with garbage and the flow hindered by ramshackle obstructions.

| Phase #1 Initial Mass Pollution Reduction
The process of pollution of the Paco waterway like many others around the world has occurred over decades, with a progressive increase in pollution loading Kg by Kg as the city expanded. Now, this process is being reversed with a progressive process of pollution reduction and in-situ treatment focused on reducing the pollution level Kg by Kg to a level where the waterway can return to life again.
The phase #1 Manila installation is located approximately half way down the Estero de Paco, one of Manila’s most heavily polluted waterways.
The phase #1 installation is focused on an initial reduction of mass pollution loading, of COD/BOD and NH3 with subsequent phases proposed, with additional Active Island treatment above and below the Paco Market to achieve the full mass pollution reduction target and water quality goal. |
