Floating Ecosystems Launched in Bristol Harbour

Over the weekend, the first phase of a 700m2 Floating Ecosystem project in Bristol was introduced into Bristol Harbour during the City’s vibrant Festival of Nature. This exciting initiative is part of Bristol City Council’s project to provide new moorings and facilities for the boating community at Capricorn Quay, a picturesque area within Bristol’s floating harbour, located just across from the iconic SS Great Britain.

The launch was a hands-on community event, bringing together festival-goers of all ages. Enthusiastic visitors, both young and old, rolled up their sleeves to help plant the Ecosystems and carefully transport them to the launch site at Canon’s Marsh Amphitheatre. From there, the newly planted islands were towed along to their new home at Capricorn Quay.

The project was featured on BBC1 Points West evening news and on the BBC News Website. Read the full article on the BBC News Website

These Floating Ecosystems are more than just a beautiful addition to the harbour; they provide a habitat for wildlife, improve water quality, and contribute to the biodiversity of the area. This innovative project highlights Bristol’s commitment to sustainable urban development and environmental conservation.

As these islands take root and flourish, they are expected to become a haven for aquatic species and a green sanctuary in the heart of the city. Visitors to Capricorn Quay can look forward to watching the plants grow over the summer as the Ecosystems become established.
